May Newsletter

Principal Thoughts

Hello School Family!
Well it is May and we are quickly closing in on the end of another school year.  It has been exciting to work with your students this year and I am looking forward already to the 17-18 school year.

Our students and staff have shown grit and determination as they stretch their minds this school year learning new topics.  I am confident that the proof of their hard work will be reflected in our scores on recently completed state testing.  We should have individual scores sometime in early summer and a new school report card this fall.

During the upcoming summer our school will continue to be a very busy place.  We will be receiving upgrades to our heating and lighting systems, new ceilings in halls and classrooms, a sprinkler system and upgrades to our entrance security.  Unfortunately to accomplish all of this work our building and playground will be off limits to everyone including myself for most of the summer.  Mrs. Tennessen and I will have a home base somewhere in the district (likely at Victor Haen) during the construction and the school phone number 920-766-6129 and our emails will still be monitored during this time.

Another exciting announcement is that our school will be receiving new playground equipment next fall!  The Kaukauna Area School District Board of Education approved a plan to upgrade playgrounds at Haen, Park Community and Tanner.  Due to the construction in our building they will not be able to install the new playground until September.  The plan is for the site to be professionally prepared and old equipment removed around the week of September 18th.  We will then need 10 - 12 volunteers who will install the new equipment on the poles that are installed by the playground company.  More information will be coming as school starts for volunteering.  If you are interested you can always email me at kortensk@kaukaunasd.org or call at 766-6129.  Here is the latest drawing from the playground company.

With all this talk of summer it is still important to note that we have several weeks of learning left in this school year.  Please encourage your children to remain focused and engaged in learning.

Thanks again for your support!

Lambeau Field Booth Fundraiser Update

Park Community Charter School will be staffing a booth at Lambeau Field this coming season.  We will need staffing at our booth during all events at Lambeau Field beginning with the Billy Joel concert on June 17th, Family Night in July, All home games during the preseason, regular season and playoffs.

Workers MUST BE 18 or over to work the booth.  No exceptions!

Workers DO NOT need to be connected to our school.  Bring friends, co-workers or other adults to help our school be successful in this fundraiser.

The potential for a large profit is great!  Some organizations our size have made up to $30,000.00!  Our hope is to get this going along with our golf outing and the Kaukauna Strong Challenge to a point were we can eliminate the need for smaller fundraisers.  We are not asking you to buy anything with this fundraiser we just need your help.

Those working an event need to be at Lambeau 2 hours before the event and remain after the event until cleared to leave by Delaware North Staff.  A typical game day will be a 6-8 hour shift.

We will add additional dates when the Packers make the playoffs!

An informational meeting will be held on May 23rd for all who expressed interest in helping out on a previous survey.

The Kaukauna Strong Challenge

The Kaukauna Strong Challenge was a huge success!  We had a total of 139 participants for our three events.

  • Bike:  28
  • Walk:  51
  • Run:  60
Thank you to everyone who participated or volunteered.  The proceeds from this event will be used to help purchase interactive boards in all classrooms for the 17-18 school year.  Check out this short video of our day and make plans to participate in the 2018 Kaukauna Strong Challenge on Sunday May 6th!

ART - Mrs. Mueller’s Artist Tidbits

Our Art Schow was a huge success.  Parents and supporters of our school were able to visit and see all of our student's work displayed in our halls and gym.  Participants were also able to vote for their favorite work among pieces selected by Mrs. Mueller for the Golden Brush Award.

Here are the winners of the 2017 Golden Brush Award!

  • Kindergarten - Riley Tapio for his Peacock
  • 1st Grade - Brooklyn Anderson for her Doxie
  • 2nd Grade - Norah Verhagen for her Cats
  • 3rd Grade - Jena Kinas for her Jellyfish
  • 4th Grade - Aurora Baer for her Dragon Eye
Congratulations to all of our winners and to all of our students on an amazing year full of amazing artwork!

A message from Mrs. Vander Loop in the “filling station"

Greetings,
Here are titles fitting for the month of May, from TUMBLEBOOKS.
Enjoy!

May books

May books
May 1: May Day!
May Day dates back to ancient Roman times, when people would celebrate Flora, the goddess of flowers!
Nowadays, it has many meanings to many different cultures and religions. Nevertheless, it keeps its hopeful springtime outlook! We hope you enjoy "Rose's Garden" this May Day, 2017!
May 4: Star Wars Day!
May the Fourth be with you! Today is a fun holiday dedicated to the classic Star Wars series! Also interesting: in 2017, the series celebrates its 40th aniversary.
May 5: On this date… The First American in space.
Flying a Mercury Spacecraft, Alan Shepard became the first American man in space on May 5th, 1961!
Celebrate his spirit of adventure, and American ingenuity with the classic TumbleBook, "Let's Go!"

May 6: Free Comic Book Day!
Every year, on the first Saturday in May, Comic Book Stores, authors, artists, publishers, and other retailers celebrate "FREE COMIC BOOK DAY" by offering up some amazing content to their loyal readers and comic book newbies!
Join us in celebrating the day with Neil Gaiman's classic, Coraline!
*Please note that this title is available on Premium subscriptions only.
May 11: Happy Birthday, Martha Graham! (1893-1991)
Martha Graham was born on May 11, 1893, and was a hugely influential American dancer during her long and illustrious career!
We like to think that she'd get a kick out of "Frank was a Monster Who Wanted To Dance" about a friendly little monster who LOVES dancing so much, he just FALLS APART!
May 14: Happy Birthday, Gabriel Fahrenheit!
Born on May 14, 1686, Gabriel Fahrenheit would be 331 years old today! Fahrenheit is most famous for developing his Fahrenheit Scale which measures temperature based on three fixed points: 0 was the temperature of salt water ice bath, 32 was the point at which water freezes, and 96 was the temperature of a human body.
Explore what it means to be hot and cold, and how the body reacts to those changes, in "Too Hot! Too Cold!"
May 14: Happy Mother's Day!
In North America, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May… this year it's May 14th.
TumbleBooks honours Mothers and maternal guardians everywhere by presenting "The Biggest Job Of All"!
May 15: International Day of Families
May 15th is the international Day of Families! Families come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they live close together, but sometimes they may live far apart. Sometimes two people make a family… and sometimes there are DOZENS.
As different as families are, the most important thing they all share is LOVE... as the TumbleBook "I Love Saturdays y Domingos" will show.
May 17: On this date… The US Supreme Court officially desegregated American schools
On May 17, 1954, the US Supreme Court ruled in the case of Brown Vs. The Board of Education and officially desegregated schools in the United States. This meant that black people could go to school with white people, and opened up more educational opportunites for children around the country.
In "Ruby's Wish", Ruby can definitely empathize with this struggle. All she wants is to learn and be given the same opportunites as her brothers! But because she is a girl, she is expected to grow up and marry, not go to university. Ruby shows how important it is to persevere in the fight for equal rights.
May 17: Day against Homophobia
May 17th is a day to to stand up to homophobia, a form of bullying and discrimination.
TumbleBooks has many books which teach children that bullying is bad, including one of our favorites: "I Miss Franklin P. Shuckles".
t is about a little girl named Molly who befriends and then betrays her friend Franklin because she wanted to fit in with the "cool" kids who were making fun of him.
The story tells a timeless lesson: that love and friendship are stronger than bullying and alienation.
May 23: World Turtle Day
May 23rd is a day to bring attention to the important role that Turtles and Tortoises play in the world's ecosystems!
We hope "Turtle, Turtle, Watch Out!" will do just that!
May 25: Geek Pride Day!
Don't Panic! Do you know where your towel is? No matter… the cake is a lie, anyway. Speak "friend" and enter!
May 25th is Geek Pride Day, and if you're not quite sure what anything meant in the first part of this section, that's ok! Join the GEEK side - we have cookies! AND BOOKS! "Bill The Boy Wonder" is a fantastic TumbleBook that tells the story of the original creator of BATMAN!
Like a leaf on the wind, you'll think I am your father, but I have a bad feeling about this... because you might Expecto Patronum and ask "beam me up, Scotty!"
(But wait! There's More! May 25th is also Towel Day, in honor of hoopy frood extraordinaire, Douglas Adams, and his classicn book "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy"!)
May 27: On this date… The Grand Opening of The Golden Gate Bridge!
The grand opening of the Golden Gate Bridge, in San Francisco, California, was held on May 27, 1937. It had taken four years, and over $25 million to complete! Construction began in January of 1933!
The classic TumbleBook, "Pop's Bridge", tells the story of just a few of the MANY workers who helped build the bridge, particularly those who lost their lives when a scaffolding fell shortly before the grand opening. It is an endearing story that shows the importance of teamwork and respect.
May 29: World Digestive Health Day
What goes in… must come out! You are what you eat! Let's chew the fat… That's my cup of tea!
If the sheer number of English idioms about eating and digesting are any proof, digestive health is vitally important to our lives! After all, you wouldn't want to bite off more than you can chew!
Learn more about digestive help with the TumbleBook "Quest to Digest"!
May 29: Memorial Day
The United States celebrates Memorial Day on the last Monday in May. The day honors those who've given their life in military service to the country.
Why not take a trip around the country's capitol this Memorial Day, by reading "Postcards from Washington, D.C."?

Physical Education with Mrs. Wells and Mrs. Stratton

Mrs. Wells

Mrs Stratton
In April, students worked on endurance and strength through the fitness racetrack, the PACER, and a continuous jog. This challenge would be a great way for students to practice these skills. We hope to see you all there!

As the school year comes to a close and the weather starts to get nice, we will hopefully be taking PE outside. Students will be finishing up the soccer unit and ending the year with cooperative games!

News from the School Nurse - Mrs. Sundelius

Prevention is the best protection against sunburn and it’s damage.  However, we all know that there are times when your child may suffer from sunburn.  So how do you treat it?

Here are 5 tips to help decrease the pain and damage related to sunburn.
  1. Get out of the sun and cool your child’s skin as soon as possible.
    • If you’re near a cool body of water, take a quick dip, but only for a few seconds so you don’t prolong your child’s sun exposure. Then cover them up and get out of the sun immediately.
    • Continue to cool the burn with cold compresses.
    • Or take a cool shower or bath, avoid harsh soap, which might irritate the skin even more.
  2. Use a gentle moisturizer on your child’s skin after ever shower or bath when their skin is damp.  Do not use petroleum or oil-based ointments as they can trap the heat on the skin and make the burn more painful.
  3. Decrease the inflammation by giving your child a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen.  Wearing loose breathable clothing will also help avoid further inflammation and irritation.
  4. Replenish your child’s fluid.  Burns draw fluid from the rest of the body so dehydration is more apt to happen.  Help your child re-hydrate by drinking lots of water.  Avoid high-sugar beverages.
  5. Seek medical help if your child has blistering, a fever or chills, is confused or has other signs of infections such as increased redness or irritation.
Remember prevention is the best cure.  So always apply sunscreen with a minimal SPF of 15 on your child whenever they are going outside.

SCHOOL COUNSELING NEWS!! From Mr. Zamost

May Classroom Guidance

During the month of May, students will be introduced to the relationship between learning and work, realize the importance of good work habits and focus on age-appropriate employability skills, such as organizing and problem-solving.  Students enjoy sharing their developing interests, strengths and dreams.  Kindergarten, first and second grade will think about potential careers and how they relate to their “jobs” at school.  Third and fourth grades will begin to recognize the connections between school responsibility and career responsibility while looking at their own personal interests and abilities.

K-Kids Update!

That is it for K-Kids! We had a great year and got to help the community while learning what it takes to be a contributing member of society. We ended the year with a pizza party and celebration. Thank you all for your support and I am already looking forward to next year! Below is a video that K-Kids put together, enjoy!

Reading News from our Reading Specialist - Mrs. Keehan

Free Preschool Screening

The Kaukauna Area School District will be holding a free preschool screening at Tanner Early Learning Center on June 2nd, 5th, 6th and 7th for Kaukauna Area School District children. Information about the screening has already been mailed to most parents of children who will be four on or before September 1, 2017.   In addition, parents of three year olds are encouraged to schedule a screening if there are any questions or concerns about their child’s development. The screening results will be used to provide parents with information about their child’s current development and to provide suggestions for follow-up activities. Parents will also receive information about district and community services.   When there is reasonable cause to believe a child may have an impairment, the child will be referred for an evaluation.

The screening will last approximately one hour.  Please call 766-6150 (Tanner School) if you need
registration information.   You will be notified of your appointment date and time about two weeks prior to the screening.

2017-18 Schedule Brings More Opportunities for Elementary Students

The Kaukauna Area School District is proud to share some exciting enhancements to the elementary schedule for the 2017-18 school year. Students in kindergarten through grade 4 will all see an increase in their MAPE-L (Music, Art, PE and Library) time. In addition to these options, a new exploratory encore opportunity will be added to the offerings 1 time per 6 day rotation. This course will promote creativity, collaboration, exploration and problem solving around the elements  of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEM / STEAM). This addition supports the skills of communication, problem solving, creativity and collaboration which are essential academic and life skills. Additionally, STEM was a priority interest from the School Perceptions Survey administered this winter.

The revised schedule will run on a Day 1-6 concept versus a traditional Monday - Friday structure. The approved calendar will be revised for elementary families with the Day 1-6 identified for ease of use. For example, a student may currently have library checkout on Tuesdays.  Anytime a vacation day was on a Tuesday this year, the student missed his/her library checkout.  Next year, the student would have library checkout on a “number day”, such as Day 3.  If a vacation day happens to fall on what would normally be a “Day 3” on the schedule, that “Day 3” will be scheduled for the day right after the vacation, meaning the student would not miss library checkout.

More information, including the calendar with the Day 1-6 structure added will be shared  in the coming months.
